CEREMONY- On the day of Raksha Bandhan families gather together early in the morning to celebrate this auspicious day. Sisters prepare a thali (a decorated plate) containing the Rakhi (thread), diya (lamp), Roli (vermilion), sweets and grains of rice. But lord Vishnu’s wife Goddess Laxmi wanted to go back to her residence named ‘Vaikuntha Dham’. After that she tied the Rakhi around the wrist of the devil King Bali. After that when Bali asked her about what gift she wanted then she asked him to unbound her husband from the solemn promise which he made to Bali and surprisingly Bali granted this wish to his sister.

There are more narrations and stories of the festival of Rakhi being performed by the folkloric characters of Hinduism; The Mahabharata illustrates another story as to why this festival is celebrated. Princess Draupadi tied Rakhi on Lord Krishna’s arm while her mother-in-law Kunti, tied Rakhi on the arms of her grandson Abhimanyu before the war of Kurukshetra.
