History of Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort history” is a very interesting topic. The ruler of Mandore, Rao Jodha who founded the city of Jodhpur built the Mehrangarh fort. He wanted to move his capital to a place which is safe and at a higher. For this reason, he started building this large fort in 1459. Shri Karni Mata, a female warrior sage laid the foundation stone of the fort. It is said that to build this fort Rao Jodha had to move a hermit named Cheeria Nathji who used to live on the hill. It made him angry and he cursed that the fort would face the shortage of water. To make peace, he built a temple and a house within the fort for the hermit. It is also said that to break his curse, a man named Raja Ram Meghwal was buried alive in the foundation of the fort by the king. The man himself agreed to this sacrifice so the king promised to take care of his family that he kept.

As time passed, descendants of Rao Jodha kept improving the fort from time to time. Jaswant Singh of Marwar later developed the Mehrangarh Fort into what it is today.
