The Desert In The Mountains
(Population 135,000 approx.)
(Best time: May to September)
'The land of several passes'. As its name describes 'La' means 'pass' and
'dakh' meaning 'several'. It is uniquely located between the two highest mountain ranges in the world - the South Himalayas and the North Karakoram range.
This barren plateau lies between the height of 2900-5900
metres. The Indus river flows through this area bisecting it with its many tributaries. Despite the Indus the land is arid and has low oxygen content in the air. This paucity of oxygen and the dry rarified air makes survival a struggle. The coldest inhabited place in the world next only to the Tundra in Siberia, it has extreme temperatures of -40 degrees C in the Winter which rises to 38 degrees C in the dry hot summer.

Leh, the main town of the region, is dominated by Sengge Namgyal's nine-storey Palace, a building in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture, said to have inspired the famous Potala in Lhasa, which was built half a century later. Above it, on Namgyal Tsemo, the peak overlooking the town, are the ruins of the earliest royal residence at Leh, a fort built by King Tashi Namgyal in the 16th century. The associated temple remain intact, but they are kept locked except during the morning and evening hours when a monk toils up the hills from Sankar Compa to attend to the butter-lamps in front of the images.
